Frequently Asked Questions - Rental Cars

ABSOLUTELY!!!  Do not risk arriving at your destination without a reservation.  In todays busy travel market many rental companies sell out in advance and may not have rentals available when you arrive.

No.  Car rental companies require a credit card at the time of pick-up.  For security reasons, most do not accept cash payments at any time.  However, there are some companies who will allow you to pay for the rental with cash when you return the vehicle.  A credit card will still be needed at time of pick-up but you may be able to cash out at the end of the trip.

This may vary between rental car companies and destinations.  As a general rule, drivers must be at least 21 years of age for most rentals.  Some companies may require drivers to be at least 25 years of age.

There are rental car companies who charge a “youth surcharge” for drivers between the ages of 21 and 24.  These fees must be paid prior to being allowed to rent the vehicle.

  1. A valid driver’s license.
  2. A major credit card.  Accepted cards may vary between rental companies.
  3. Meet the needs of the basic rental deposit requirements for your reservation.

In most cases the answer is YES as long as there is enough money in the account to cover the deposit requirements.  Be aware that the rental car company will place a hold for the amount of the deposit and that money will not be available to you during your trip.  Upon returning the rental, you can expect the deposit hold to be released to your account which can take up to seven (7) business days depending on your bank.

With most rental car companies the answer is Yes!  The pay now option may be paid by debit or credit card if accepted by the company.  Keep in mind you will still need to present a valid major credit card at the counter when picking up the rental.

Plain and simple, NO!  You must present a valid ID/driver’s license and major credit card at time of rental pick-up.  The names must match on both items.  There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this rule.

  1. Make sure you read the rental agreement.
  2. Ask about any additional charges.  ie: insurance, optional equipment, tolls, gas
  3. If you see anything you don’t understand, ask the agent to clarify and make note of the agent’s name.

Be aware that any changes to your reservation can affect pricing

  1. Pay in Advance: You can pay in advance for a tank of fuel at the counter when you check in. This is the most convenient option as you are then free to bring back the car empty.  NOTE: Credit is not given for unused fuel.
  2. Self Refueling: Plan to stop for gas on the way back. You will need to keep your receipt and provide upon drop off to avoid any refueling charge.

DO NOT cancel any reservations.  Contact your booking agent if you need to make changes.  Your agent will make necessary arrangements before releasing your previous reservation.  If you cancel before rebooking, you may not be able to reserve the vehicle again.  Once your new reservation has been confirmed, the previous reservation will be cancelled by your agent.

If you no longer need your vehicle rental, please contact your agent to cancel the reservation.  In some cases, cancellation penalties may apply.

For most vehicle rentals the answer is “NO.”  However, some prepaid reservations or special requests may have penalties for cancellation.  Check with your reservation agent when making decisions concerning your reservation.
